About this product

DN780 — Digital Reverberator/Processor

The DN780 is the legendary Klark Teknik digital reverb introduced in 1986, and remains one of the most influential British digital reverbs of the 1980s. Its dense, characterful tail and its unusual programme architecture — including the Infinite Room program — earned it a permanent place on the records of the era and a continuing place in contemporary mixing rooms hunting for the specific character of a DN780.

Conversion and Topology

The DN780 uses 16-bit quantisation with a frequency response of 20 Hz to 12 kHz, dynamic range of 85 dB and THD below 0.03%. The unit is mono-in/stereo-out, a topology typical of mid-1980s digital reverbs that drives the wet signal as a stereo image from a single source. Electronics are distributed across six printed circuit boards in a semi-modular configuration, eliminating unreliable edge connectors while keeping servicing tractable.

Programme Architecture

50 rewritable memory locations store user programs. A sequence function allows instant recall of up to 16 factory or user memories in user-defined order — designed for live application changes between songs. The programme library spans straight delay, varied echo effects, chorused and modulated reverbs, sound-reverse and the surreal sustained tail of the Infinite Room. The optional remote control unit allows the chosen setting to be selected via the sequence key and then modified using the parameter sliders.

Application

Studio reverb on vocals, drums and programme material where the specific DN780 character is the desired effect. Live FOH on tour racks where the sequence-recall function supports rapid programme changes. Broadcast effects work for documentary and feature production requiring a 1980s digital reverb signature.
