MultiMaster operation mode: Quick start guide

1. Introduction

Helix MultiMaster mode gives you the flexibility of a normal DN9340E-master Helix system, with the convenience of a RapidE -driven system for GEQ editing.

Once connected and initialised, the user may make changes to the audio using either the front panel of the DN9340E or the faders and menus of the RapidE, without reconnecting or reconfiguring the system.

This combines the ability to tailor all the filter types available on Helix with the high speed show-time grab-GEQ provided by the RapidE.

2. Required equipment

  • RapidE with software v4.08
  • One (1) DN9340E Master unit with software v4.04
  • Up to sixteen DN9344E slave units with software v4.04

Please note, MultiMaster mode is NOT compatible with older non-E Helix units (DN9340/DN9344), even if they are configured as slaves. Additionally, MultiMaster mode may not be used in conjunction with a connection to a PC running Elgar remote control software.

3. System connection

Your system may be connected by Ethernet cabling in any of the configurations available for a normal Helix system (please see unit documentation for diagrams). However, for most resilient operation it is recommended that Helix units are connected directly to the rear of the RapidE rather than daisy-chaining.

Each unit needs to be configured with a unique IP address (and correspondingly broad subnet mask) and Helix communications ID.

4. Power-up sequence and configuration

  • Power on DN9340E, set comms mode to SLAVE
  • Power on DN9344E units, if any
  • Power on RapidE, and once booted scan for the appropriate number of channels of EQ
  • Once RapidE scan is complete and correct, unit name edits may be made using the RapidE’s menus
  • Once all slaves are detected and named, switch the DN9340E comms mode to MASTER with the corresponding number of channels, and begin the scan for units
  • RapidE will be locked out while this process completes
  • Once scan is complete, acknowledge the warning on the RapidE’s screen regarding name editing using the HOME key

Your system should now be online in MultiMaster mode. Any further configuration or power cycling of any part of the system will negate this mode, and the above process must be repeated.

5. Using MultiMaster mode

In this mode, the front panel of the DN9340E master will follow individual channel changes made on the RapidE, and vice versa. The DN9340E may be used to edit any parameter on any unit, while the RapidE may be used to edit GEQ settings on single channels or using Group or Global mode (in which case the DN9340E will continue to display the most recent individual channel).

It is not recommended to make EQ changes from both points simultaneously.
